Illini get challenged by Northern Illinois alumni

Here are words I thought I’d never utter, “Northern Illinois is the best football team in the state of Illinois.” Yet, following the Huskies victory over Northwestern and given Illinois’ struggles to be competitive over the past few years, that statement couldn’t be more true.

So, when you’ve got a big victory against one of the Big Ten boys in your state you get bragging rights. In this case, Northern Illinois has turned that win in to a challenge for the other big boys in the state.

It appears that alumni of the school have taken out a full-page ad in the Chicago Tribune today:

They even made fun of the claim that Northwestern is “Chicago’s Big Ten Team” by claiming NIU is “Chicago’s Big Time College Football Team!”

Now, that’s how you troll a team after beating them folks. It taunts the losing team, but not in a classless way, and also finds a way to up the ante a bit.

It would be an interesting game to say the least, especially considering the Illini have struggled to beat mighty Youngstown State and Western Kentucky.

However, we doubt that the Illini want to take this challenge on, considering they hate losing to Northwestern already and there’s little to gain in a contest with the Huskies.

Win and so what, take a loss and they prove a lot of people right — NIU is the best team in the state of Illinois. That’s just the sad reality of how low Big Ten football has sunk in the state.
